Please see the LB 155 discussions in Status & Member Actions for Three Homeschool Bills and Three New Legislative Bills Affecting Home Education for details on LB 155.
LB 155 UPDATE:
This morning (March 17, 2017) the NCHEA received an email from Senator Brasch stating the following:
“I have come to the conclusion that I will honor your request and will, therefore, be offering an amendment which clarifies that the bill will apply only to public high schools in Nebraska. Please send out an email explaining this to all the people whom you told to contact me and express their concerns.
Please click here to read the statement of intent of what the amendment will do.”
The Statement of Intent linked in Senator Brasch’ email above says, “The intent of LB 155 is to require that, to graduate from a public high school in Nebraska, each student must correctly answer seventy percent of the questions on the U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization Test. This requirement should serve only as a baseline of what students should be expected to know as an educated citizen after graduating from a public high school in Nebraska.”
This means that Senator Brasch will provide an amendment exempting exempt schools from LB 155 today. She will present the amendment, rather than the original bill, at the hearing on Monday, March 20, 2017. The NCHEA is grateful to Senator Brasch for doing this.
Please do not contact Senator Brasch’ office regarding LB 155, she has already responded to our requests.
The NCHEA will still testify at the hearing in order to show reasons for our support of Senator Brasch’ amendment and to encourage the Education Committee to adopt it as a committee amendment prior to placing LB 155 on General File for action by the full legislature.
LB 14 is currently in the process of being modified by AM625 to expand the language of the bill dramatically (still only for public schools). It is no longer effectively the equivalent of LB 155 but applied only to public schools as noted in the previous LB 155 discussions linked at the top of this page.
